With Technology At Helm, South Korea Ready To Contribute To Global Innovation

With AWS’s Seoul Data Centre region going live in January 2016 and Microsoft announcing plans in May 2016, all eyes were set on IBM and Google.

While the latter is yet to make any announcement on this topic, the former announced its new Data Centre in Pangyo, South Korea on 25 August 2016. Per IBM’s official statement, this is the company’s 9th Data Centre in the Asia Pacific including Japan (APJ) region (part of its Global network of 47) and an outcome of its collaboration with SK Holdings C&C.

Vodafone India has renewed its technology outsourcing contract with IBM for five years. Rivals such as Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys were also in the fray for a deal that analysts say is worth $750-850 mn (Rs 5,025-5,695 crore).

O9 August, 2016, IBM India announced the renewal of its partnership with Vodafone India.

The mobile network operator outsources services like management of application development and the network services in the IT sector. IBM, which is trying to retain the deal, is also planning to sell its data analytics solutions to Vodafone, as published in an Economic Times report, adding that companies like Wipro, TCS, Infosys and Tech Mahindra are also under consideration for the deal.

Dell EMC deal great on the books but not for the cooks

The India market at this point of time is opportune for a Dell-EMC deal to take place considering India is still a host to a large number of organisations who are yet to shift workloads to the cloud. The deal would put the merged entity in a sweet spot as it would be providing end-to-end infrastructure in terms of both devices and storage. And the CIO community in India is closely watching the movements on the Dell-EMC merger.

Dell’s announcement to buy enterprise storage maker EMC for $67 billion could boost the world’s second largest PC maker’s pace of growth in the Indian market, analysts said.

With revenue of over $2 billion from India in the last fiscal, Dell is the fastest growing company among its peers. It expects to cross $3 billion over the next two years, which until yesterday could be seen as an ambitious target but not so much anymore.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) said it will open an AWS infrastructure region in India for its cloud computing platform in 2016.

“Tens of thousands of customers in India are using AWS from one of AWS’s eleven global infrastructure regions outside of India. We’re excited to share that Indian customers will be able to use the world’s leading cloud computing platform (AWS) in India in 2016 – and we believe India will be one of AWS’s largest regions over the long term,” Andy Jassy, Senior Vice President, AWS, said in a statement.
